Eddie was born in Durham and moved to Royton at the age of 4 or 5 and lived in Royton for the rest of his life.  He appeared for Oldham Athletic (Amateur) 3 times, then moved to Bolton Wanderers, after doing his national service and made 519 appearances (the club record).

Eddie was considered to be one of the best goalkeepers of his time. In the 1958 FA Cup Final, Bolton Wanderers against Manchester United, it was his ability as an all round goalkeeper kept Manchester United from scoring, resulting in Bolton winning.  As the England goalkeeper, he was awarded 14 caps.

After his retirement he was an assistant trainer, the an assistant manager of Stockport County. After Eddie became a company representative for a Chemical Company.
